2014 Ponzi Vineyards Tavola Pinot Noir
Ponzi Vineyards has produced a very food-friendly wine with their Tavola Pinot. "Tavola" is the Italian word for table, which was the inspiration for this wine.
We were a bit skeptic at first, thinking we'd be opening any old "table wine," as its name would indicate. Boy, were we wrong!
This Pinot is complex, yet super easy to pair with food. We got some plum, forest floor, and very subtle oak notes, with a long lasting finish. Pair with dinner or drink on its own!
Excellent effort from a long time favorite winery of GMW!

Thanksgiving Wine Picks from our Blog!
Sure, you might think pairing wine with Thanksgiving is a difficult task, but it doesn't have to be! There is such a wide variety of foods, from turkey (white and dark meat) to sweet potatoes to stuffing. The trick is to find wines that are versatile, so the wine and food compliment each other, elevating both the flavors of the wine and food.
To you red-wine drinkers: Take a break from your cabernet if that's your usual suspect. Lighter varietals like Pinot Noir compliment well without overpowering the dishes. To you white-wine drinkers: You're in luck, white wines are easier to match with Thanksgiving foods. This might also open you up to the lighter bodied reds that you wouldn't normally think of trying! To everyone: This could be an opportunity to expand your palates!
Many of these wines are widely distributed, so you should be able to find them. If not, try something similar! Rhode Islanders, no excuses! You should be able to find these everywhere!
2008 St. Ludwin Riesling - Our top pick for Thanksgiving. This riesling will stand up to the wide variety of delicious dishes on Turkey day! Even white wine naysayers will enjoy this wine. Bursting with flavor!
2009 A to Z Pinot Noir - Excellent Red to pair with your diner. Medium in body, it will pair well with just about everything on your table. It's spicy and loaded with black cherry!
2008 Louis Jadot Beaujolais Villages - We originally passed on this red wine, but we think it'll go great with Thanksgiving dinner. It boasts a medium body packed with cranberries! Pretty interesting now that I think about it, in the spirit of Thanksgiving anyways!
2009 Hunt Country Vineyards Valvin Muscat - The flavors were bursting with juicy ripe peaches, grassy notes, and slate. The wine had good mouthfeel--dry with a long finish--similar to Dry Riesling. Truly a delightful white wine your guests will love!
2009 Big House White - Refreshing white wine with just enough citrus, honey and spice to go well with your bird and sides! Oh, and you don't need to buy it in a box; it comes in bottle!
2009 Newport Vineyards Select Riesling - Yet another great riesling for Thanksgiving! Again, riesling is a very versatile wine when pairing with food for the holiday. This one in particular makes Rhode Island proud!
2008 Dona Paula Estate Malbec - This red from Argentina will be great for your red-wine drinkers. Its medium body and black cherry flavors serve as a wonderful pairing for Thanksgiving dinner. This is a great wine by itself and could be even better when paired with a meal!
2005 La Vieille Ferme Cotes du Ventoux - Layers of different flavors make this French red wine a wonderful pairing for your turkey dinner. A bit of earth, raspberries, cherries, and herbs make this a great candidate for your pairing!
2009 Le Grand Pinot NoirThe only decent pinot noir that we've found under $20. The flavors are intriguing enough without being overpowering for your meal. It can create a very nice balance with dinner.
2007 Bonterra Vineyards Zinfandel - Spicy, full bodied Zinfandels can pair very well with dinner. It may run the risk of overpowering some of your dishes, but its richness will surely pair well with most recipes.

2009 A to Z Pinot Noir (Oregon)
The nose displayed green pepper, moss, and black cherries. The flavors were loaded with black peppercorn and black cherries. There's even a nice buttery mocha and light oak on the back end! Mouthfeel on this Pinot Noir was excellent--gripping tannins, medium body, and lasting finish. The balance of acidity is excellent--not flat at all--something we find in other Pinots. Top Pick!
Body: Medium
Approx. Cost: $20
Food Pairing: Grilled pork chops

Seufert Pinot Noir Tasting
Gimme More Wine had the wonderful opportunity to taste five Pinot Noirs by Seufert Winery in Oregon. The interesting part of this tasting was that four of the five Pinot Noirs were from the same vintage (2007) made by the same winery. The difference between these wines is where the grapes were grown. The same grape, Pinot Noir, was used from vineyards merely miles apart. Characteristics of the soil and lay of the land play a large part in how the grapes develop. It is amazing to discover how different these wines can turn out simply as a result of vineyards so close together. To make things interesting, we tasted these blind as a group! We loved every minute of it.
2007 Seufert Vista Hills Pinot Noir
A great pale brick red color, this Pinot noir started our tasting off! We got a lot of currants and earthiness on the nose--nice aromas! We tasted those same currants and earth along with some figs. The tannins were delicate and acidity was slight, but there was a little heat. This medium bodied red was good, but simple. At its $30 price point, we would expect better balance without the heat from alcohol.
2007 Seufert Bishop Creek Vineyard Pinot Noir
Similar in color to the Vista Hills, this offered stronger aromatics. Blackberries and black cherries were accompanied by spice and a surprisingly present gravel note! This was more fruit forward than the last with ripe black fruits, spices, and a little green pepper. Great balance of medium body, with tight tannins and precise acidity. The layered flavors in this Pinot were more complex, scoring a bit higher than the last.
2007 Seufert Coleman Vineyard Pinot Noir
The color was much more vibrant than the other Pinots! It was struggling to be aromatic, though we were able to pick up soil, basement, and earthy notes, which we love! We wished it opened up a little more in the glass. The flavors of earth and basement (even a little driftwood and leather) were there, though the mid-palate and finish were short. The tannins were nice and tight, something we've found in each of the wines. The flavors seemed a little one-dimensional, which held us back a little.
2007 Seufert Williamette Valley Cuvee Pinot Noir
Very vibrant ruby in color! Awesome nose! A lot of that earthy basement we love in Pinot Noirs. We even got a little bacon and blackberries. Gripping, yet delicate, tannins were led by wonderful earthiness and juicy plums. This Pinot Noir had very hood balance of both mouthfeel and flavors. Excellent wine!!
2009 Seufert Zenith Vineyard Pinot Noir
This had a good mix of earthiness, spices, and even prunes and figs on the nose. The mouthfeel was nice--it was the fullest bodied of the bunch. Ironically it had more mature wine characteristics than the others: deep earth flavors and dark musty basement. There was a touch of heat present, but it is overwhelmed by its great flavors.
As you may have noticed, many of the flavor types were present in all of these wines: a lot of earthiness and a little fruit. The differences were mainly in mouthfeel, complexity, length, and balance. Each wine had its own forte, making this tasting super interesting!
We urge you to check out Seufert Winery. They are a detect example of why Oregon is capable of making some exceptionally good Pinot Noirs! Cheers!

2007 Seufert Winery Flying Figurehead Syrah
This is an interesting medium bodied syrah from Seufert Winery, a family run business in Oregon. They pride themselves with their Pinot Noirs, but there is something to be said about this syrah.
The aromas are earthy, with traces of mocha, oak, coffee, dark fruit, and moss. Although it's medium in body, there is a great flavor profile in this wine that will please most wine drinkers (white pinot noir-drinkers and cab-drinkers alike). It tastes like cranberries and figs, along with some floral notes. These flavors balance well with its subtle acidity and delicate tannins. The finish is smooth and lingering--very nice! For about $20, this wine offers complexity and a delicious flavor profile! Not a bad combination in our book!
We're preparing to compare and contrast 6 of their pinot noirs soon, so be on the lookout for that! Learn more about Seufert Winery here!

2008 Undone Pinot Noir
Very pale light cherry in color, this pinot lacks some interest. It is a light-medium bodied wine with flavors of earth, cranberries, along with a pretty decent balance of acidity and tannins. All of these flavors are very one-dimensional and kind of flabby. At about $12, we're going to give this a pass! There are much better values out there. The search continues for an under $15 Pinot Noir! Any recommendations?

2009 Le Grand Pinot Noir
Not bad for a 2009. I picked this one up, because I've had the Le Grand GSM, which was great! This was on sale for 2/$15!! So I gave it a whirl, and it isn't bad at all!!! Great value! It has some really nice cherries and spices, but a little bit of heat. This is a spectacular deal for $7.50. Lighter body (pinot noir), so pair it with pork, grilled chicken or even fish!! Give this a try if u see it in your local store, you won't be disappointed!
